Rs 3,500 Crore Boost for Chennai: Inside the Upgraded Double-Decker Port Corridor Plan

Major Infrastructure Upgrade for Chennai's Logistics Network

Chennai is set to receive a significant infrastructure boost with the Rs 3,500 crore double-decker port corridor project now moving at full speed. The 20.9 km elevated corridor will form a key infrastructure link between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, dramatically improving freight and city traffic movement efficiency.

Double-Tier Structure Revolutionizes Cargo Transport

The project has been upgraded into a double-tier structure with major design changes, significantly increasing capacity and allowing separation of heavy freight traffic from local urban vehicular movement. This innovative approach represents a paradigm shift in how Chennai manages its logistics and urban traffic.

The upper level is designed exclusively for container trucks and port-bound freight vehicles, ensuring uninterrupted cargo flow directly between industrial zones and Chennai Port without city traffic disruption. Meanwhile, the lower tier supports urban traffic with 13 entry and exit ramps at key locations, improving connectivity across Chennai and easing congestion along major city routes near the Cooum river corridor.

Strategic Ramp Locations

Ramps are planned at major junctions including Sivananda Salai, College Road, Spur Tank Road, and Koyambedu, ensuring smoother movement and reduced travel time across high-density traffic corridors in Chennai. These strategic entry and exit points will significantly decongest major road networks in the city.

The project also incorporates modern cable-stayed bridges at important junctions such as Napier Bridge, enhancing structural strength, durability, and ensuring seamless connectivity across challenging urban and waterway crossings.

Boosting Chennai's Cargo Handling Capacity

Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency and increase Chennai Port's cargo handling capacity from the current 53 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) to nearly 200 MTPA by 2047. This substantial increase will strengthen trade connectivity and position Chennai as a major logistics hub in the region.

The double-decker port corridor represents one of Tamil Nadu's most ambitious infrastructure projects, combining modern engineering solutions with practical urban planning to address Chennai's growing logistics demands while minimizing the impact on city traffic.
