Yastika Bhatia Makes Triumphant Return to International Cricket with Match-Winning Fifty

A Dream Comeback for Yastika Bhatia

Left-handed batter Yastika Bhatia staged a dramatic and successful return to international cricket on Thursday, smashing a match-winning half-century to lead India to a 38-run victory over England at Chelmsford in the first T20I. Bhatia’s performance was more than just a sporting achievement; it was the culmination of a grueling recovery process following a serious knee injury.

Overcoming Adversity

Bhatia had been sidelined since early September of last year after sustaining a knee injury during a preparatory camp, which eventually led to ACL surgery in October. The injury forced her to miss not only international assignments but also this year's Women's Premier League (WPL). Reflecting on the mental and physical toll of the recovery, Bhatia admitted the journey was far from easy.

"Those who undergo ACL surgery, the whole muscle of that leg goes away. We have to build everything from scratch. After the surgery, it was pretty tough to go through the rehab process. There were days when nothing was happening. No progress was visible," Bhatia shared. "But because of the support, I kept on going, kept showing up and after months, I could see the improvements."

Dominating the Powerplay

Bhatia’s impact was immediate. Coming into the side with several key players, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, being rested, Bhatia played a pivotal role in India's batting effort. After the visitors lost both openers cheaply, Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues forged a critical 126-run partnership for the second wicket.

Bhatia was particularly aggressive during the Powerplay, racing to 40 off just 17 balls and taking on bowlers like Issy Wong, Lauren Bell, and Sophie Ecclestone. India capitalized on this momentum to rack up 73 runs in the early phase. Though she slowed down after the field restrictions were lifted—scoring 12 more runs off 23 balls before being run out in the 14th over—her initial blitz set the foundation for India's total of 188.

Teamwork and Debutant Success

Bhatia praised the maturity of her partner, Jemimah Rodrigues, noting that Jemimah's constant encouragement helped her maintain her flow. "She was always having a conversation... she would tell me 'No problem, Yasti. You are batting like a dream, just keep playing and you will get the gaps,'" Bhatia recalled.

The victory was further sealed by the exceptional performance of debutant pacer Nandni Sharma. Despite a rocky start, Sharma claimed two wickets in two balls in her second spell, finishing with 3 for 43—the second-best figures by an Indian pacer on a Women's T20I debut.

"Nandni is a product of the WPL. It's good to see her come here and do so well," Bhatia said, adding, "It's an exciting time for Indian cricket that whoever is coming to the XI is making a statement and making a contribution."

Expressing her gratitude, Bhatia thanked her family, the surgeons, and the staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore for their unwavering support during her rehabilitation.
