Toto Wolff Praises Kimi Antonelli's Performance in Miami Grand Prix

Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, praised Kimi Antonelli's performance in the Miami Grand Prix, calling it his best race so far. Despite facing challenges such as slow starts and downshifting issues, Antonelli managed to secure his third consecutive win, drawing comparisons to his karting days in Formula 4.

Antonelli's victory in Miami marked his third consecutive win, a feat that has not been seen in F1 for a long time. He started the season with a strong performance, securing pole positions and converting them into wins in Japan and Miami. However, the Miami Grand Prix presented new challenges as many of his rivals, including McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari, brought extensive upgrade packages, making the competition tougher.

During the race, Antonelli faced pressure from Lando Norris of McLaren, who reduced the 19-year-old's lead to around a second but was ultimately unable to overtake him. The race was not without its difficulties for Antonelli, as he experienced a shaky start and concerns over downshifting issues. However, his ability to recover and maintain his lead under pressure was commendable.

Toto Wolff highlighted the significance of Antonelli's performance, stating, "It's easier to slow someone, climb someone down that is wild, because you won't be able to accelerate a donkey. For me, that was his best race so far. It reminds me of his karting days in Formula 4."

Wolff also acknowledged that the team had some issues to address, particularly with the clutch and grip estimates, which affected Antonelli's start. He emphasized the need for the team to improve in these areas to ensure that Antonelli can continue his successful run. "We are the only ones who, let's say, haven’t got that right now for a few races. We just have to dig even deeper to try to understand how we can fix that, because I agree that the gaps are not big enough to cruise into the sunset and therefore you can't be missing starts," Wolff said.

Despite the challenges, Antonelli's performance in Miami has been a testament to his skill and composure under pressure. Wolff is optimistic about the young driver's future, noting that the parents are keeping him grounded and that the team is working to support his development. "That is the risk that he's being carried away too quickly," Wolff said. "We know that the parents are going to keep him grounded. This year, it's coming together. I don't think that any of us would have expected this kind of run. We've given him a car that is very good, and an engine that is right, but how he's been able to monetise on that every single weekend is special."

As the season progresses, the focus will be on maintaining Antonelli's momentum while addressing the team's technical issues. With 18 rounds remaining, the F1 community is eagerly watching to see if Antonelli can continue his historic run and potentially become the youngest-ever World Champion.
