Investigation continues nearly two months after Nolan Wells was found dead

The death of Southwest Mississippi Community College wide receiver Nolan Wells remains unresolved after his body was found on Horn Island on July 6, following a Fourth of July weekend gathering with friends.

Although reports have circulated that Wells drowned, his death has been ruled accidental. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the precise cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Coroner reports no recorded drowning deaths in recent years

According to a report cited from PEOPLE, the Jackson County coroner said there have been no recorded deaths caused by drowning at Horn Island in more than half a decade. However, young people have reportedly been hospitalized in recent years following drowning-related incidents.

The coroner's finding has added another layer of uncertainty to the case because Horn Island is the location where Wells' body was recovered after his friends had left the area.

Boat operator warns of dangerous currents

A local boat operator told NBC News that people who grew up around the island had died in the surrounding waters, despite the absence of recently recorded drowning fatalities. “It’ll humble you very quick,” the operator said.

He also warned that the currents can overwhelm swimmers without warning: “I don’t care what kind of shape you’re in. Those currents can get you, and before you even realize you’re in trouble, you’re gone.”

Family marks Wells' 19th birthday with vigil

Wells' family held a candlelight vigil to mark his 19th birthday as they continued to grieve and seek answers. His parents and siblings have faced public criticism and online trolling while calling for a thorough investigation.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said Wells' family deserved “a thorough and factual investigation,” adding that authorities would provide one. The circumstances surrounding the 18-year-old's death have not been made public, leaving his family and the wider community waiting for clarity.
