The final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort delivered one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 season, with Lando Norris converting pole position into a second consecutive victory — but not without a chaotic opening that saw home hero Max Verstappen crash out on the first lap.

Verstappen, racing in front of his adoring home fans in what was Zandvoort's final appearance on the F1 calendar, lost control of his Red Bull at the damp final corner and slammed into the barriers. Debris and a wheel were sent flying, prompting an immediate red flag. The four-time world champion walked away uninjured but was left devastated. "Good," he said when asked how he was feeling. "I think I still hit the SAFER barrier maybe, potentially. But I think also a more frontal impact is actually a bit better than a sideways one, so from that sense all okay." Summing up his weekend, he added: "This weekend, of course, was disappointing. Disappointing pace, and a disappointing end to the weekend. I think you can sum it up like that."

Norris's masterclass

After the restart, Norris found himself behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who had made a stunning start to take the lead. But the reigning world champion bided his time, then struck with a brilliant move around the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 54 to take the lead for good. From there, he pulled away to win by 11.5 seconds, earning his second straight victory and completing a perfect farewell weekend for the circuit.

"I'm incredibly happy to take the win at the final race here in Zandvoort, but it was a real fight," Norris said. "For the first half of the race, especially on the Soft tyre, I honestly didn't think a win was possible. Once we put the Hard tyres on, the car came alive. The team's strategy was perfect, and that gave me the opportunity on fresh tyres to attack. Committing to the outside of Turn 1 was the move that won us the race."

The performance earned Norris the Driver of the Day award with 18.5% of the fan vote, narrowly edging Fernando Alonso (17.7%) — who put Aston Martin back in the points — with Lewis Hamilton third on 13.1%.

Mercedes salvage double podium

Despite lacking the pace to challenge for victory, Mercedes secured a valuable double podium with Antonelli finishing second and George Russell third. The team made the controversial call to invert their cars in the closing stages, with Russell — who had stayed out during a late Virtual Safety Car — asked to let his fresher-tyred teammate through. Team principal Toto Wolff called it "the logical consequence" of their pre-race discussions about maximising results as a team.

Verstappen's final home race ends early

For Verstappen, the weekend had begun on a high note with the announcement of a contract extension keeping him at Red Bull until 2030. But after qualifying only seventh and struggling for pace throughout, his race ended at the first corner. Liam Lawson, filling in for the injured Isack Hadjar, drove a solid race to finish seventh for Red Bull, while Yuki Tsunoda impressed in his one-off return for Racing Bulls, finishing 11th after climbing from 12th on the grid.

Zandvoort now departs the F1 calendar, bringing to an end a beloved home race for Verstappen and the Dutch fans who created one of the most electrifying atmospheres in Formula 1.
