Hannover 96 and St. Pauli settle for 1-1 draw in 2. Bundesliga primetime
Hannover 96 1-1 FC St. Pauli
Hannover 96 (2-1-4, 14th) and FC St. Pauli (2-4-1, 7th) shared the points in Saturday’s primetime 2. Bundesliga fixture in south-central Niedersachsen, with the match ending 1-1 after a first-half lead for the visitors was cancelled out by a second-half strike for the hosts.
Going into week eight of the 2026/27 2. Bundesliga season the two sides were separated by just three points. A St. Pauli win by three or more goals could have moved them up to sixth, while a Hannover win would have lifted them six places to eighth, potentially seventh with a four-goal margin.
First half
Benjamin Källman punted the ball into the right side of the St. Pauli third to start the game. The hosts in red went left to right in the opening term, with the visitors in white going right to left.
The first chance fell to St. Pauli in the fifth minute when a cross from Louis Oppie was met by a right-footed shot from Connor Metcalfe towards the top-centre of the goal. The 26-year-old Australia international’s attempt was gloved down by Leo Weinkauf.
Hannover’s first chance came three minutes later. Husseyn Chakroun played the ball into the path of an open Källman, who darted into the right side of the box. Lars Ritzka stopped the move with a well-timed slide tackle, the rebound fell back to Chakroun who powered his attempt past a diving Ben Voll and into the bottom-left corner. VAR officials Benjamin Cortus and Frederick Assmuth spotted an offside on Källman after consultation with head official Felix Pragan and the goal was nullified.
Stefán Teitur Þórðarson pulled Joel Chima Fujita to the ground in the central area of the Hannover third in the 13th minute. Eric Smith’s resulting free kick towards the top-left corner did not seriously test Weinkauf. Þórðarson then went into the book in the 17th minute for a foul on Arkadiusz Pyrka on the right side of the hosts’ third. Ritzka tried to pick out the top-left corner from distance but his left-footed effort went just over the bar.
A corner conceded by Smith in the 26th minute led to a delivery into the left side of the box by Maurice Neubauer. Kolja Oudenne headed the ball into the goal area and Virgil Ghiță followed with another header that sailed just over the bar.
Källman shot from distance in the 34th minute, nearly picking out the bottom-right corner. Five minutes from halftime Abdoulie Ceesay played the ball short to Pyrka whose powerful shot towards the bottom-right corner was smothered by Weinkauf. Tomiak deflected the rebound away before the visitors won a set piece.
Hannover continued to press. Forty minutes in, Ghiță started a 3v2 onside run from the left side of the St. Pauli half and delivered a cross into the right side of the box; Källman met it with a header just wide of the right post. Marcel Hartel’s long-range attempt three minutes later missed the bottom-left corner.
St. Pauli took the lead in the last minute of the opening term on the counter. A cross from Oppie into the right side of the box was met by Ceesay, who leapt above Jean Hugonet and Tomiak to direct the ball past a leaping Weinkauf and into the bottom-right corner. Felix Prigan sent both sides to the dressing rooms with St. Pauli leading 1-0.
First-half stats: shots 7-7, 4-1 on target to St. Pauli, possession 51% to St. Pauli, touches in the opposing penalty area 11-6 to Hannover, pass accuracy 80% each, passes completed 201 to St. Pauli and 198 to Hannover.
Second half
St. Pauli kicked off the second half with a Niang pass back to Rasmussen. Hannover had the first chance in the 49th minute when a through ball from Källman found a wide-open Chakroun who slammed the ball past a charging Voll and into the bottom-right. Prigan consulted VAR and, with Ritzka having fouled Källman in the build-up, Chakroun’s goal was allowed to stand. Sandro Wagner’s side were level at 1-1.
Neither side created a clear chance until the hour mark. A corner to the visitors was played short by Metcalfe towards Pyrka, who went for the top-left corner from the edge of the box. Weinkauf made an acrobatic stop with his right glove. Ceesay leapt above Tomiak in the 72nd minute to head a cross from Chima Fujita off the left post. Weinkauf gathered the rebound.
Hannover pushed again six minutes later when Neubauer sent a ground pass along the right side of the box, deflected by David Nemeth. The rebound fell to Källman whose low attempt towards the bottom-right corner was denied by Voll.
The only moment of note in five minutes of second-half stoppage time was an injury to St. Pauli substitute Ricky-Jade Jones, who landed awkwardly on his elbow while trying to keep possession of a rolling ball against a standing tackle from Waniss Taïbi. The full-time whistle soon followed with the sides sharing the points.
