Haines hits 130 and Price takes five as Sussex crush relegated Hampshire by 197 runs

Sussex closed their Rothesay County Championship campaign in emphatic fashion, completing a dominant 197-run victory over relegated neighbours Hampshire in the final session of day three at the Utilita Bowl.

Captain Tom Haines led the way with a magnificent 130 before Tom Price claimed 5-33 as bottom-of-the-table Hampshire, set an almost impossible 436 to win, were bowled out for 238. The win brought Sussex 19 points and guaranteed a top-three finish — all the more impressive given they began the season with a 12-point deduction.

Sussex players celebrate during their County Championship win over Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl

Haines completes century off the first ball of the day

Resuming on 99 not out overnight, Haines reached three figures off the very first delivery of the morning — his first County Championship century since April 2025. With the lead already at 332 runs, Sussex batted for just over an hour with half an eye on having Sunday off, adding 103 runs as Hampshire spinners Felix Organ and Andrew Neal sent down all but two overs of the session.

Neal had Jack Leaning — who made 78 in the first innings — out early for 12, before Haines was trapped lbw by Organ, looking to sweep to the short boundary, for 130. Jack Carson then had some fun, blasting 28 off just 16 deliveries, 24 of them coming the way of sixes in consecutive overs, and first-innings hero Jaydev Unadkat joined the party before Haines called his side in at 11:37 BST on 319-9.

Hampshire crumble to 3-4

Unadkat struck with his third ball of the reply, trapping Organ on the pads after Nick Gubbins had been dropped at second slip the delivery before. Price then had Toby Albert plumb in front before bookending his second over with the wickets of Tom Prest and Joe Weatherley for ducks, leaving Hampshire reeling at 3-4 — to loud jeers from the crowd when a single brought the runs level with the wickets on the scoreboard.

Having slumped to 26-4 by lunch, Hampshire were soon 29-5 when Ben Brown was caught behind.

Gubbins and Mayes dig in

Gubbins, who had a life first ball, offered the hosts' sternest resistance, reaching a battling half-century with minimal celebration. He put on 85 for the sixth wicket with 18-year-old Ben Mayes, but both were dismissed in quick succession by the spin of Carson.

Neal and James Fuller then battled through to tea with a fluency the top order would have liked, guiding Hampshire to the break at 192-7, before Tom Clark pulled off another screamer — backing up his one-handed grab from day two — to remove Fuller for 39.

Price wraps up a five-wicket haul

Neal went on to his maiden Championship fifty, but the job was done for Sussex when he and Kyle Abbott were pinned lbw by Price, sealing the bowler's fifth career five-wicket haul and sparking the celebrations.

Sussex won seven of their 14 Championship matches in 2026, while Hampshire — who took just three points from the game — end the season at the foot of Division One.
