Shubman Gill Overtakes Virat Kohli to Claim No. 2 Spot in Latest ICC ODI Rankings
In a significant shift in the ICC ODI batting rankings, India captain Shubman Gill has climbed to the No. 2 spot, overtaking his teammate Virat Kohli, who has slipped to third place. This remarkable achievement comes on the back of Gill's stellar performance in India's recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
The right-hander displayed sublime form throughout the series, playing a pivotal role in India's dominant 3-0 clean sweep. Gill scored 84 in the opening ODI before producing a magnificent 154 in the second match. His exceptional performances earned him the Player of the Series award and propelled him three places up in the rankings.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli dropped one position despite continuing to be among the most accomplished ODI batters in world cricket. The former India captain had held the No. 2 spot for a considerable period, but his absence from the Afghanistan series was due to the right hamstring injury he suffered during the IPL 2026 final between RCB and GT.
However, Kohli is set to return for the three-match ODI series against England in July 2026, where he will look to reclaim his position while competing alongside Shubman Gill. The upcoming series presents an opportunity for both players to further cement their places in the rankings.
Rohit Sharma, who currently occupies fourth place, also played a crucial role in India's Afghanistan victory, scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of over 115, including fluent knocks of 48 and 79 in the final two matches.
New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell continues to reign at the top of the ODI batting rankings with 815 points, while Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran's position has slumped after a disappointing performance against India.
