England Recover Stolen Training Kit Five Days Before World Cup Opener
England Secures Training Equipment Ahead of World Cup
England have successfully recovered several items of stolen training kit just five days before their World Cup opener against Croatia, providing relief to Thomas Tuchel's squad as they prepare for their campaign kickoff.
The theft occurred in Kansas City, Missouri, when the Football Association's logistical team was setting up their new base at the Swope Soccer Village. The items – primarily footwear – were taken from a van that had not yet been fully unloaded. Sources with knowledge of the team's situation, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, confirmed that the missing items had now been recovered.
Kansas City police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. "We are investigating a possible theft of equipment," the force said in a statement to The Athletic. "Two suspects have been taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing."
Pre-Tournament Preparation Continues
Despite the incident, England have maintained strong form in their pre-tournament preparations. Thomas Tuchel's side spent ten days in Florida at a pre-tournament preparation camp, where they faced New Zealand and Costa Rica, beating both teams without conceding a goal.
Following their 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, England also played a behind-closed-doors friendly against American second-tier side Miami FC on Thursday, which they won comprehensively 6-0. The squad was then given a day off before flying to Kansas City on Saturday.
"The investigation is ongoing," the force said in a statement, emphasizing their commitment to resolving the matter.
World Cup Group Stage Schedule
England will kick off their World Cup campaign on Wednesday against Croatia at the Dallas Stadium. Following that, they will play Ghana at Foxborough's Gillette Stadium on June 23 before rounding off their group against Panama in New York-New Jersey on June 27.
Argentina and the Netherlands are also based in Kansas City for the tournament. The World Cup holders will use Sporting KC's main training facility, while the Dutch will train at the base of NWSL side Kansas City Current.
The recovery of the training kit will come as a relief to the England squad as they look to make a strong start to their World Cup campaign against a formidable Croatian side.
