David Beckham Added to Hollywood Walk of Fame: 'I'm Living the American Dream'
David Beckham Makes History with Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
England and Manchester United legend David Beckham was presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, becoming the first soccer player to receive the honor. The 51-year-old Inter Miami co-owner had his name added to Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California in a ceremony alongside his wife Victoria, three of their children Romeo, Cruz and Harper, and American actor Tom Cruise.
A Historic Moment for Soccer
Beckham spent much of his career playing for Europe's biggest clubs, graduating from Manchester United's academy before signing for Real Madrid in 2003. He had short stints with AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain towards the end of his career. He increased his presence and popularity stateside when he signed for Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy in 2007 in a landmark move for the U.S.
He is now a co-owner of Inter Miami, who joined the league as an expansion side in 2020 and won the MLS Cup in 2025. During and after his playing career, Beckham transcended the sport and became a mainstream figure in fashion and popular culture.
Walk of Fame stars are most commonly given to Hollywood-famous actors or musicians, though some athletes have been presented with a star in the 'sports entertainment' category. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali, tennis icon Billie Jean King and former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson all have their names on the walk, though Beckham has become the first ex-footballer to join them.
Tom Cruise Honors Beckham's Journey
"There was a young boy with a dream, and the determination and discipline to earn everything that followed," Cruise said, introducing Beckham. "That's why this feels like such a fitting place to celebrate him. His is a Hollywood story."
"A boy who believed in something bigger than himself, had to work for every opportunity he received, and went on to influence his sport, shaped culture around the world and create opportunities for the generations who followed."
Victoria Beckham praised her husband for never "losing sight of what matters most" before David took the podium.
Beckham: 'I'm Living the American Dream'
"I must admit that this is all rather surreal," Beckham said. "I've experienced some amazing moments in my career, but to be here in Los Angeles, receiving a star on the world famous Walk of Fame is truly incredible."
"I've always been a dreamer, but I never could have imagined that an honor like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me."
"I feel truly honored and fortunate to be living the American dream, so I give thanks to this country. To the fans that embraced us, the people that welcomed us and made our adventure so much fun. I want to thank my teammates, my friends, my team for always being in my corner and cheering me on."
Beckham was speaking ahead of the U.S.' World Cup opener against Paraguay at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, which they won 4-1. Los Angeles will host eight World Cup fixtures including two round of 32 matches and a quarter-final game.
