Ferran Torres Makes Instant Impact at PSG

Ferran Torres enjoyed a dream debut for Paris Saint-Germain, coming off the bench to score twice and rescue a 2-2 draw for the defending Ligue 1 champions against Rennes on the opening day of the season.

PSG found themselves in serious trouble when a stunning strike from Sebastian Szymanski and a composed finish from Esteban Lepaul put Rennes 2-0 ahead, leaving Luis Enrique's side staring at a shock defeat to start their title defence.

However, the Spanish coach made a bold decision at half-time, withdrawing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele in favour of Ferran and Mika Godts — a move that transformed PSG's performance in the second half.

Ferran pulled one back in the 71st minute, finishing past Brice Samba at his near post, before sealing a share of the spoils eight minutes from time with an inch-perfect header from a Fabian Ruiz cross.

Joining Elite Company

With his inspired display, Ferran became only the third player in PSG's history to net a brace on his debut, following in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who achieved the feat against Lorient in 2012, and Patrick Mboma, who did so against Vac FC in Champions League qualifiers in 1994.

Despite the remarkable individual achievement, Ferran acknowledged that the team's overall performance required improvement.

"The match was difficult. It was complicated, we're not happy because we wanted to win, but it's important to leave with a draw," Ferran said. "It was special to play my first match in front of the Parisian fans, and it will be even stronger at the Parc des Princes."

He also highlighted his blossoming understanding with international teammate Fabian Ruiz: "My relationship with Fabian Ruiz? With his quality, we just have to run and put the ball in the back of the net. It's a great group, I knew it was before I arrived, there are only good people, great players on a daily basis, who have helped me feel good here."

Samba Praises "World Champion" Ferran

Ferran's display even drew praise from Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba, who conceded his team let a golden opportunity slip away.

"All credit to Ferran Torres, a new world champion in our league," Samba said. "We saw all his quality, even if I think his two goals are largely avoidable with a little more concentration and a little more freshness. Overall, it was a good performance against the two-time European champions. We took a point and we'll move forward."

"We wanted to win, especially with the scenario of the match when you are winning 2-0, but we're not going to be picky, it's a point and we're moving forward," he added.

Luis Enrique's Ruthless Approach

PSG struggled badly in the first half, generating an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.59 from 10 shots, prompting Luis Enrique to take off two of his biggest names at the interval.

The decision proved merited — PSG have now scored 31 goals via substitutes in all competitions since the start of last season, at least six more than any other side.

When asked about his reasoning for replacing Kvaratskhelia and Dembele, Luis Enrique was blunt: "That's football. That's how football is. PSG didn't win anything. If you think about what you've won, you're not going to win anything. For me, the most important thing is that there is no credit."

"You have to show every day, every practice, every game, that you're ready, otherwise it's easy to rest. No. We're looking to win all the time and to win all the time, you have to get out of your comfort zone, that's clear."

The result means PSG have started a Ligue 1 season without a win for the first time since Luis Enrique's very first match in charge — a reminder that despite their status as two-time European champions, complacency will not be tolerated under the Spaniard's watch.
