Brian Brobbey's hat-trick in defeat joins unwanted Premier League club last seen in 2007

A hat-trick in vain

"Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick against Manchester City and ended up on the losing side. How often has that happened in the Premier League, and who has scored the most goals in a game their team lost?" asks Alejandro Solis. Brobbey's was the sixth example and the first in almost 20 years.

The last man to achieve this dubious feat was Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz in December 2007. He single-handedly dragged Blackburn back into the game from 3-0 down, only for Wigan's Marcus Bent to score two more goals and complete his own hat-trick.

The first two were scored by Matt Le Tissier, on the final day of the inaugural season and the opening day of the 1995-96 season. The cruellest is probably Dion Dublin's: he's the only man to put his team in front on three different occasions and still lose.
