'He narrated for three-and-a-half hours': Sundeep Kishan on what drew him to Jason Sanjay's 'Sigma'
A three-hour-plus narration that sealed the deal
Sundeep Kishan's upcoming Tamil film Sigma is set to hit the screens on October 2 amid growing curiosity, with the project marking the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, son of actor-turned-politician Vijay. The film has already drawn attention for its young filmmaker and its fresh combination of talent. Sundeep Kishan plays the lead, and in a new conversation he has explained exactly why he agreed to be part of the venture.
Speaking to Cinema Vikatan about how he came on board, Sundeep said Jason Sanjay personally travelled to Hyderabad to pitch the project. "Sanjay came to Hyderabad and narrated the story for three-and-a-half hours. The way he narrated it and the clarity he had really impressed me," the actor said. He added that the meeting took place even before the release of Raayan.
'He had watched my films and knew what he wanted'
Sundeep revealed that Jason Sanjay had done his homework, having watched the actor's earlier work and explaining in detail which performances he liked and why. "By then, we had developed a good understanding. He was very clear about what he wanted to give the audience and worked very carefully to bring his vision to the screen," he said.
In Sigma, Sundeep plays a character named Guru and said he followed several things Jason showed him while developing the role. "The film has come out very well. I have mostly worked with debutant directors, and I never look at them as newcomers. I look at why they want to make that film and whether I can see the cinema they are imagining when they narrate the story," he explained.
The actor cited Maanagaram, his collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj, as proof that working with a first-time filmmaker can produce something special, and believes Sigma could become another such experience.
A debut director who wrote for someone else
Sundeep said the story remains his biggest priority when choosing films. "When I heard the title 'Sigma', I liked it. After listening to the story, I liked it even more," he said. He also revealed he never felt pressured while working under Jason's direction, and instead wanted to give the debutant filmmaker the support he needed.
Notably, Sundeep praised Jason for choosing to direct rather than act in his first film. "When a director writes his first film, he usually writes himself as the hero. But Sanjay did not take that route," he said, adding that Jason's simplicity and confidence in his vision stood out during the making.
The actor noted that many people from the industry have been asking him about Jason and his directorial debut. "At 24, he had many easy opportunities, but choosing to direct a film itself surprised me," he said, expressing hope that Sigma connects with audiences and becomes a successful beginning for a new generation of filmmakers.
