Piastri 18;confident19; Mercedes are beatable in 2026 despite their dominant start

Oscar Piastri has expressed confidence that Mercedes39; current dominance in the 2026 Formula 1 season can be challenged, despite the Silver Arrows winning all three Grands Prix so far. The McLaren driver39;s belief stems from his strong performance in the recent Japanese Grand Prix, where he not only outperformed George Russell but also led the race early on before his first pit stop.

A Glimmer of Hope for McLaren

McLaren began the season with reliability concerns, failing to start both cars in China due to electrical issues. Their pace also lagged behind Mercedes, with Piastri qualifying over eight tenths behind Russell in Australia. However, progress has been evident: the gap narrowed to under half a second in China and less than four tenths in Japan.

Piastri39;s ability to overtake both Mercedes drivers at the start and maintain a buffer over Russell during the opening stint was seen as a significant morale boost. 1c;Yes,1d; Piastri affirmed when asked if Mercedes are beatable. 1c;I think we knew from last year... that even when you have the best car you still need to operate it at an incredibly high level. And I think today on our side we did a really good job of that.1d;

McLaren39;s History of In-Season Development

Piastri39;s optimism is grounded in McLaren39;s proven track record of turning around seasons through aggressive development. In 2024, the team started as the fourth-fastest but surged after introducing a major upgrade package in Austria, going on to win four out of six races from Zandvoort onwards. That momentum carried them to their first Constructors39; Championship since 1998.

The following year, McLaren further refined their car to withstand the pressure from Red Bull and Max Verstappen, ultimately securing both the Drivers39; and Constructors39; titles.

Power Unit Advantage and 2026 Prospects

Adding to their potential, McLaren benefits from using the same high-performing Mercedes power unit. If they can optimize its integration with their chassis, the team believes they can close the gap even further.

1c;We39;re under no illusion,1d; Piastri cautioned. 1c;We did everything right this weekend and we still got beaten by 15 seconds, so we39;ve got a pretty big gap to fill. I39;m confident that we can get there, but yes, we39;ve still got some work to do.1d;

Their progress will also encourage Ferrari, who have been Mercedes39; closest challengers in Australia and China. With McLaren39;s history of innovation and relentless development, the battle for supremacy in 2026 is far from over.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how quickly McLaren can evolve their package — and whether Piastri39;s confidence will translate into podium challenges and race wins.
