A transfer collapse that exposed a serious problem

Jean-Philippe Mateta says he is grateful that a failed medical prevented his proposed move from Crystal Palace to AC Milan, because the examination uncovered the true extent of a long-standing knee injury.

Mateta had been expected to join Milan at the end of the winter transfer window after expressing a desire to leave Palace. The London club had prepared for his departure by signing Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves, but the transfer to Italy collapsed when Mateta failed his medical because of a meniscus issue.

The problem was reportedly linked to a meniscus rupture Mateta suffered while playing for Mainz in 2019. He was subsequently sidelined for a month after returning to Palace, but made his comeback in March.

“A blessing in disguise”

Speaking to Canal+ Foot, Mateta described the moment the move stopped and explained why he now views the failed medical positively.

“My knee injury was actually more serious than I had been told,” Mateta said. “Ultimately, I don’t regret anything, because if I hadn't done that medical exam, how long would I have been dragging this knee issue along?”

He added: “Luckily, I had that medical and found out exactly what was wrong with me.”

European silverware and a strong campaign

Mateta returned in time to play a central role in Palace’s run to Conference League glory. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 final victory over Rayo Vallecano and ended the campaign with 16 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions.

Only Ismaila Sarr, with 21 goals, scored more for Palace. Mateta also made two appearances for France at the summer World Cup as the team reached the semi-finals and finished fourth.

He will now look to lead Palace into another strong season, beginning with an opening-day Premier League trip to Everton.
