Romero sets trophy target after Atletico move

Cristian Romero has completed his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid, arriving at the LaLiga club with an immediate ambition: to win silverware and establish himself as part of its history.

The Argentina international joins Atletico in a reported €40 million (£34m) deal after five seasons in the Premier League with Tottenham. Romero made 156 appearances for Spurs and was their leading defender for duels won, interceptions and clearances during that period, while also ranking second for tackles won.

He played a key role in Tottenham’s 2024-25 Europa League triumph, which ended the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy after victory over Manchester United in the final. He now wants to pursue further success in Madrid.

“I know I come with the same mentality as always, trying to write my name in the history of this beautiful club,” Romero said after his official unveiling.

“I know the only way is by winning trophies, so I come with that mentality and I will give everything until the last day to achieve it.”

Romero said Atletico’s identity and playing style were a strong fit for him. He also pointed to the presence of several Argentina team-mates and the influence of facing the club in the Champions League as factors in his decision.

“I will give my absolute all, no doubt,” he added. “I know I'll be 100 per cent committed to this crest, to this shirt.”

Atletico completed their pre-season with a 2-1 victory over Marseille. Their LaLiga campaign begins against Malaga on Wednesday, followed by a home match against Villarreal the following weekend.
