Watford Ease Pressure on Dionisi as Zemura Seals 2-0 Win Over Charlton
Watford lifted the pressure on head coach Alessio Dionisi and quelled their supporters' rebellion against owner Gino Pozzo with a deserved 2-0 win against a sluggish Charlton at Vicarage Road.
Goals from Luca Kjerrumgaard and the substitute Jordan Zemura — the Zimbabwe defender's first for the club — extended Charlton's worrying run to eight games without a win, with the visitors booed off at the final whistle.
After shipping nine goals in calamitous defeats by Burnley and Cardiff City, Watford had slumped into the bottom three and the fans had turned their anger on Pozzo. Despite the mood of insurrection swirling around the owner on social media, protests against his 14-year ownership outside the ground before kick-off were limited.
Crucially, Watford kept their first clean sheet in 210 days and claimed just their second win in three months.
Background to the win
The result came at the end of a turbulent fortnight for the Hornets. Earlier in the week, prior reporting indicated that Dionisi was expected to remain in charge for the Charlton fixture despite a 5-1 thrashing at Cardiff City on 14 October that had condemned Watford to a fourth successive league defeat and left them in the relegation zone.
That decision was described at the time as a break from the club's habit of making swift managerial changes. Dionisi had been appointed in June on a two-year contract, making the Italian Watford's 12th head coach — not including interim bosses — since the end of the 2020-21 season.
His side had negotiated a challenging start to the campaign well, beating Southampton at Vicarage Road and then drawing away at Wrexham and at home to West Ham, before form fell away dramatically. The 4-0 defeat by Burnley on 11 October had already deepened the gloom and drawn a public response from the club's most famous supporter.
