Balde commits to Barcelona fight for his place after deciding to stay

Left-back turns away from exit talk as Flick welcomes him back into the fold

Alejandro Balde has reportedly told Barcelona he wants to stay and fight for his place in the team, ending days of speculation about a summer exit amid links to Manchester United.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the defender has now told Barcelona he does not want a move and is ready to fight his way back into Hansi Flick's starting XI at Camp Nou. Romano adds: "His intention is clear; decision up to the club after exploring sale. Only a big proposal from a top club can change the scenario."

The left-back was left out of the Barcelona team to face Elche last week after Gerard Romero reported that Balde had decided to seek an exit. Flick said after the match he had left Balde out so the player could "clear his head," insisting he had not told the defender to find a new club.

Flick's message to the left-back

Asked in a press conference on Wednesday, Flick confirmed Balde would return to the squad for Thursday's La Liga clash with Athletic Club and stressed he is happy to have the young defender, while sending a message about what is expected of him.

"He's part of the squad for tomorrow. Whether he plays or not, I'll decide. I've spoken with him, and the important thing is that he's 100% committed to us. He's 22 and very young, he has potential. His first season here was fantastic, but he can improve even more. He comes from La Masia and has our colors in his heart, but he needs to be here and improve. Every year, three or four players from La Masia come here who also want to play. They have to be 100% committed to professional football," he said.

The coach's message is the same one he delivered last Saturday: he is happy to have Balde around through his full commitment to fight for his spot. The plan has sparked an intense reaction on social media despite the coach's own words.

Balde faces plenty of competition for his spot. Joao Cancelo has signed permanently from Al-Hilal, Xavi Espart is reported to be promoted to the first-team after an impressive pre-season, and Gerard Martin is also an option at left-back for Flick.
