Rahul and Padikkal's Karnataka Bond and Spin Mastery Anchor India in Galle Test

A memorable highlight on Day four of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka showcased the deep-rooted camaraderie between Indian batters KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal. Following a successful DRS review prompted by Padikkal that handed Rahul a crucial reprieve, the senior partner crunched him in an exuberant embrace—nearly planting a peck on his cheek through the helmet grille.

The warm on-field dynamic is backed by years of friendship away from the game. Friends close to the Karnataka pair revealed that both are passionate coffee aficionados who frequently explore local cafés while on overseas tours. The duo are often joined on their coffee runs by fellow Indian teammates including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and their state teammate Prasidh Krishna.

"They are thick pals. They roam around the touring cities, looking for coffee joints," a common friend shared.

Pre-Tour Preparation Pays Rich Dividends

Ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, Rahul and Padikkal specifically trained together to counter spin, a regime that delivered immediate results in Galle. Across the two innings of the Test, the duo combined to produce 227 runs in partnership. Rahul accumulated 211 runs across the match, while Padikkal struck a magnificent 167 in the first innings on his way to 117 total runs across his other outings.

Reflecting on their partnership, Padikkal highlighted how mutual understanding elevates their batting:

"Batting with KL, I think it's always been enjoyable. I think I have played quite a few innings with him now, even with Karnataka as well. We have had some long partnerships. I think we play well with each other. I think it's a good partnership that we have. I think he understands the way I bat, the tempo in which I bat," Padikkal said after Day 4.

“And I do the same as well. So when you have that kind of chemistry, I think it helps in stitching that partnership. And really pushing the limits as to how far we can go. I think that's something that he helps me with.”

A Long-Standing Karnataka Connection

The 34-year-old Rahul and 26-year-old Padikkal have featured together in 27 matches for Karnataka across formats, including six Ranji Trophy games, 13 List A fixtures, and eight Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches. Their first Test appearance as teammates came during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth.

Their connection was also evident in the Indian Premier League, where Rahul, then captain of Lucknow Super Giants, orchestrated a trade to acquire Padikkal from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2024 season.

Rahul expressed deep pride in Padikkal’s progress after the youngster notched his maiden Test century in Galle.

"Yeah, very special. Obviously, coming from the same state, Dev is somebody that I've seen come through the ranks from Under-19s and score tons and tons of runs for Karnataka and make his way up to Indian cricket," Rahul said on BCCI.tv. "And in the last couple of years, he's been waiting for his opportunity and quietly toiling in the nets and trying to get better at some aspects of his batting... he's someone who loves batting and scoring big runs, and I'm really happy that he could get his first hundred."
