The surreal encounter took place on a Wednesday evening at the Gansevoort Peninsula Athletic Field. Coming off a high-profile World Cup campaign where he provided two assists for Kylian Mbappe in a thrilling 6-4 third-place finish against England, the 24-year-old star arrived in New York dressed in an orange shirt and checkered pants, lacking proper football boots.

'A once-in-a-lifetime moment'

The game was organized via GoodRec, a pick-up sports platform designed to make athletics accessible to anyone in a city. According to the platform's co-founder, Jeff Estes, the encounter was purely coincidental; the match organizer noticed Olise lingering near the pitch and invited him to participate for the final 15 minutes of the 75-minute game.

For the amateur players involved, the experience was nothing short of dreamlike. Jeff Castaneda, a Peruvian American and former professional trainee with Sporting Cristal, described the star's technical ability as "silky" and "smooth."

"It was a bit surreal," Castaneda said. "I was just watching the World Cup with him on TV, and then he showed up... You can tell when somebody plays at (a high level)… I mean, he was playing with no shoes, you know? He was enjoying himself."

Other players, including Oliver Chernyk and Samuel Nicklin, noted that despite the lack of footwear, Olise's control remained impeccable. "The ball stuck to his feet quite well," Nicklin remarked, noting that Olise could move quickly while maintaining precise control.

A trend of celebrity cameos

Olise is not the only high-profile athlete to grace the GoodRec pitches this summer. Former England and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell also joined a game at Nike Field in Roosevelt Park recently. Unlike Olise, Campbell wore full gear and celebrated scoring a goal, later posting on Instagram, "left the game, but the game never left me."

The platform has also seen appearances from NBA legend Steve Nash and Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, highlighting a growing "electricity" around soccer in New York City. Estes noted that the platform is currently experiencing its best few months on record, with soccer accounting for 90 percent of its usage across 60 North American cities.
