De Zerbi Envisions Tonali as Catalyst for Tottenham Transformation

Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his firm belief that Sandro Tonali possesses the necessary leadership qualities to become the face of Tottenham's ambitious rebuilding project. Tonali joined the North London club in July in a club-record £100m transfer from Newcastle United, ending a successful three-year stint at St. James' Park.

The 26-year-old Italian midfielder arrives with a proven track record, having made 110 appearances for Newcastle and playing a pivotal role in helping the Magpies secure the EFL Cup in 2025. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, De Zerbi highlighted Tonali's innate ability to lead, regardless of his age.

"I believe he is a player who has always been a leader in every squad he has played in," De Zerbi stated. "I was already watching Tonali when he was playing for Brescia, my hometown club and the team I support. At the age of 18, he already looked like a veteran."

Summer Overhaul and Squad Depth

Tonali is the centerpiece of a significant squad overhaul. He is set to form a new-look midfield partnership with Mateus Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham for £85m. The club has also bolstered its defense with the £52m signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, alongside free transfers including Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka.

To ensure stability, Tottenham have also secured the futures of key current players, with Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, and Antonin Kinsky all signing new contracts.

Reflecting on the shift in the club's trajectory, De Zerbi noted: "This is my first 'real' season at Tottenham, the last was about survival, but this time we can start building something lasting in the most difficult league in Europe."

Transfer Activity Continues

While several arrivals are confirmed, the transfer window remains active. De Zerbi revealed that the club's spending is not yet finished, with Manchester City's Savinho reportedly being a target.

Conversely, the club may see the departure of Djed Spence. The England international is reportedly closing in on a move to Serie A champions Inter Milan, with reports suggesting an initial offer of €30m (£25.6m) plus add-ons. Spence, who played a key role in England's bronze-medal finish at the World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, has made 85 appearances for Spurs since 2022.
