BCCI Implements Split Coaching Model: VVS Laxman to Lead India in Zimbabwe Tour and Asian Games
Strategic Shift in Team Management
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to implement a split coaching model to effectively manage the national team's demanding schedule. According to recent reports, VVS Laxman, the chief of the Centre of Excellence, will take charge as the head coach for India's upcoming white-ball tour of Zimbabwe and the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Gambhir to Take a Necessary Break
This decision comes as regular head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to take a period of rest following the conclusion of the England series. The scheduling pressure is evident, with only a narrow four-day window between the final ODI on July 19 and the commencement of the first T20I in Zimbabwe on July 23.
Supporting Coaching Staff
To support Laxman, the BCCI is likely to appoint former India cricketers Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sunil Joshi as the batting and bowling coaches, respectively. The duo is expected to bring their recent experience from India A's successful Tri-series campaign in Sri Lanka to the senior setup.
A Congested Calendar
The split coaching model is a response to an incredibly packed calendar. In addition to the Zimbabwe tour and the Asian Games, India is looking at a probable white-ball tour of Bangladesh and a home series against the West Indies, all scheduled within a similar timeframe.
