OFFICIAL: Marc-André ter Stegen Joins Ajax on Season-Long Loan from Barcelona

Ter Stegen Completes Ajax Loan Move

Dutch giants Ajax confirmed on Tuesday the signing of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen on a season-long loan from Barcelona, marking another chapter in the German international's challenging recent career.

Reunion with Míchel

The deal was reportedly a personal request from new Ajax manager Míchel, who worked briefly with ter Stegen at Girona at the end of last season. That loan spell was cut short when ter Stegen suffered a hamstring injury that ultimately caused him to miss Germany's World Cup squad this summer.

"We want to bring back this club, such a historic club, a club that has a lot of power not only in the Netherlands, but on the big stage as well, back to where it belongs," ter Stegen said upon his arrival in Amsterdam. "I am very much looking forward to playing my part in that and getting it done."

Injury-Hit Two Years

The 34-year-old has endured a difficult period, limited to just 10 appearances in all competitions since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign. His troubles began when he ruptured his patellar tendon in September 2024, missing the entirety of that season and dropping down in Barcelona's goalkeeper ranks behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.

His January loan move to Girona ended prematurely after he sustained a back injury on just his second appearance for the club. Now, ter Stegen is hoping to finally play a full season of football again after dealing with multiple major injuries over the last two years.

Financial Arrangements

According to the latest reporting, Barcelona will cover 90% of ter Stegen's salary during his time at Ajax. The Catalan club will be hoping that ter Stegen's performances over a full season can convince Ajax or another club to sign him on a permanent deal next summer, though some reports suggest there is no option to make the move permanent.

Barcelona Legacy

Ter Stegen arrives at Ajax with a wealth of experience, having made 423 appearances for Barcelona since joining them from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014. During that time, he has kept 175 clean sheets while conceding 418 goals – both figures rank second-most among LaLiga goalkeepers since his debut for the club.

Ajax's Ambitions

Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season but boasted one of the best defences in the division. Only Twente (40) conceded fewer goals than Ajax's 42, while their 11 clean sheets were the joint-most in the top flight.

The Amsterdam club have already defeated FK Vojvodina 8-2 on aggregate in their first Conference League qualifier, with a two-legged tie against Shelbourne next up. They open their league campaign against PEC Zwolle on Sunday.

"Good luck at Ajax, MATS!" Barcelona fans expressed on social media, acknowledging the goalkeeper's contributions during his 12-year stint at Camp Nou.
