Internal Turmoil at World Football's Governing Body

FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom has broken his silence following a week of chaos at world football’s governing body, labeling the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan as a "sad and reproachable series of events." In an internal memo sent to staff on Tuesday, Grafstrom, the second-highest ranking official at FIFA, acknowledged the distress caused by the project, which was drawn up by President Gianni Infantino.

Grafstrom described the preceding week as "extraordinary and challenging," admitting that staff had been "thrown into the middle of a turmoil, which is difficult to comprehend and accept." While attempting to reassure employees that they would be "defended and safeguarded from the political context," he added a pointed reflection on the current leadership crisis: "Individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go."

High-Level Dissent and Resignations

The Secretary-General is not alone in his criticism. Kevin Lamour, FIFA’s chief operating officer, previously told the Associated Press that staff had been "deceived" and characterized FFE as "the project of one person." The fallout has already led to the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, a senior advisor to Infantino, who stepped down due to his opposition to the plans.

Even Arsene Wenger, FIFA's chief of global football development, expressed shock, revealing that he only learned of the proposal through media reports. In a statement shared by FIFA, Wenger asserted that the decision to scrap the project was "absolutely necessary and beyond question," stating: "I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity."

Calls for Infantino's Exit

The internal fractures are mirrored by external pressure. UEFA has officially called for Gianni Infantino to step down, citing a total loss of confidence in his leadership. Adding to the momentum, the English Football Association is reportedly set to join the Football Association of Wales in withdrawing its letter of support for Infantino’s re-election next year.
