West Indies slash player retainers by 25% and suspend domestic competitions in cost-cutting overhaul
West Indies cricket board imposes sweeping cuts
The future of West Indies cricket has been thrown into question after the region's board announced a series of cost-cutting measures that will hit both international players and the domestic structure of the game.
International players will face a 25% cut in their retainer fees, while the men's Super50 and the women's T20 Blaze competitions have been suspended altogether.

Speaking on BBC's Stumped programme, journalist and commentator Fazeer Mohammed told hosts Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Sunil Gupta that the problems had been building for years. "The problems have been years in the making," Mohammed said, warning that the latest measures are symptomatic of deeper structural issues within Caribbean cricket.
The panel debated what the future could hold for West Indies cricket after the board's announcement, with the suspension of two domestic competitions raising particular concern about the pipeline of talent feeding the senior sides.
The cuts land as West Indies search for consistency on the field. Prior reporting from 27 September 2026 noted that the side returned to India with Shai Hope as captain, eight years after his first tour of the country, as they sought the consistency that has eluded them in recent years.
