Kohli's 139* and Gill's 110 power India to eight-wicket win over West Indies in first ODI

India draw first blood with eight-wicket thrashing

India began the three-match One Day International series against West Indies with a commanding eight-wicket victory at the Sports Hub International Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Chasing 296, India reached 300 for 2 in just 41.4 overs, with Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill both hitting centuries.

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field, a decision that paid off as West Indies were restricted to 295 for 7 from their 50 overs despite a century from Justin Greaves.

Gill and Kohli demolish West Indies attack

Gill anchored the chase with 110 off 108 balls, striking 13 fours and a six. He shared a match-defining 151-run second-wicket stand with Kohli after Rohit Sharma fell for 32 to Alzarri Joseph in the 12th over with the score on 74.

Kohli was unstoppable, finishing unbeaten on 139 from just 88 deliveries, including 10 fours and 9 sixes at a strike rate of 157.95. Ruturaj Gaikwad remained not out on 13 off 19 balls at the other end as India crossed the line with 50 balls to spare.

West Indies' bowlers struggled to contain the Indian pair. Alzarri Joseph finished with 1 for 81 from nine overs, while Roston Chase claimed 1 for 64 from his 10. Jayden Seales was the most economical, conceding 32 from seven overs without a wicket.

Kuldeep Yadav's four-for restricts West Indies

Earlier, West Indies recovered from a shaky start to post a competitive total. John Campbell made a brisk 62 off 60 balls, and Justin Greaves top-scored with 101 off 108 balls, including 12 fours. Amir Jangoo provided late impetus with an unbeaten 58 from 43 balls, hitting seven fours and a six.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of India's attack, taking 4 for 40 from 10 overs, including the key wickets of Campbell, Greaves, Shai Hope and Jewel Andrew. Prasidh Krishna claimed 2 for 60, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 1 for 45.

West Indies suffered a middle-order collapse, losing three wickets for just three runs between the 33rd and 36th overs. From 195 for 3, they slumped to 198 for 5 as Hope (12), Greaves (101) and Andrew (0) fell in quick succession.
