HSV chief pledges big spending to back promotion push
Hamburger SV vows to invest, not hoard, transfer funds
Hamburger SV has set out its stall to strengthen the squad in the coming transfer windows and is prepared to spend heavily, according to board member Eric Huwer.
Speaking on the ‘Football Finance’ podcast, Huwer said the Hanseatic club’s approach is to invest rather than retain cash.
“We don't want to hold onto the money. We want to invest it. That's what we've done in the transfer window now. Many were surprised by that – we, of course, were a little less so.”
The club also intends to keep its financial risk in transfers and target quality that can improve the team and excite supporters.
“That will continue to be our approach. If we are convinced by players who will improve us and excite the fans here, then: Let's go.”
In the most recent transfer window HSV spent around €31 million on new players, with Fábio Vieira and Zakaria El Ouahdi making up half of that sum. The outlay was offset by approximately €10 million in transfer revenue, underscoring the club’s willingness to spend without taking in excessive amounts.
