Philadelphia Union ride five-game unbeaten streak into Austin with renewed belief
The Philadelphia Union head to Q2 Stadium this weekend brimming with confidence after extending their unbeaten run to five MLS matches, with interim coach Ryan Richter insisting his side have proven they can compete with the best the league has to offer.
Statement performance against Miami
Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Inter Miami was the latest evidence of Philadelphia's resurgence. The Union led 1-0 before falling 2-1 behind after goals from Daniel Pinter and Lionel Messi, only to battle back and secure a point against one of MLS's most formidable attacks.
Richter, who has overseen the upturn in form since taking the reins on an interim basis, believes the performance sent a message not just to the rest of the league, but to his own dressing room.
"It was a message to ourselves and to the league that we can hang with any team, and I'm really proud of the performance," he said of the draw with Miami. "It wasn't the result we wanted because when we're at home, we go for wins, and we're never satisfied with a draw."
"It's not about being happy with the result, it's about the performance. It's a statement of where we're at, who we can compete with, and we have to take a lot of positives and a lot of confidence from this."
Playoff picture
Despite sitting 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference, the Union's recent run has kept their postseason hopes flickering. Just four points separate them from the wild-card spots, meaning every result between now and the end of the campaign carries significant weight.
Their opponents this weekend, Austin FC, find themselves in a similarly precarious position. The Texas club sit 14th in the Western Conference, seven points adrift of the play-off places, and are also operating under an interim coach in Davy Arnaud.
Austin finding form at home
Austin head into the match on the back of a 2-1 win over the out-of-form Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field in midweek, with Facundo Torres and Guilherme Biro both finding the net. That result marked a return to form after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Texas rivals FC Dallas the previous weekend.
Seven different players have scored Austin's last seven goals, dating back to May 16, highlighting the shared responsibility in their attack. Torres has been the chief creator, leading the team with five assists this year — no other Austin player has managed more than two.
Young talent stepping up for Philadelphia
One of the bright spots for Philadelphia has been the emergence of teenager Niel Pierre, who scored his third career goal in the draw with Miami. The 18-year-old, who will not turn 19 until October, is quickly making a name for himself, with only Danny Mwanga (five) and Paxten Aaronson (four) having scored more regular-season goals for the Union before reaching that age.
Match outlook
This will be just the second all-time meeting between Austin and Philadelphia, following a 2-2 draw in Texas in March 2024. The only one of the four goalscorers from that match still with either club is Austin's Jon Gallagher.
Austin suffered only their fourth defeat in their last 20 regular-season home matches on August 16, going down 2-1 to FC Dallas, but Philadelphia arrive as favourites with their unbeaten streak and four wins in their last five MLS outings — their only dropped points coming against Supporters' Shield contenders Miami.
Opta Win Probability: Austin FC 29.5% | Philadelphia Union 45.3% | Draw 25.2%
