Dallas clinch playoff berth as Quill praises response to Charlotte defeat
Dallas turn setback into playoff-clinching momentum
FC Dallas have secured a place in the MLS playoffs for a second successive season, with a midweek 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders followed by results elsewhere confirming their postseason berth. The win lifted Dallas to third in the Western Conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to face the Houston Dynamo.
The result was a timely response to a 3-2 loss to Charlotte FC the previous weekend. That defeat remains Dallas’ only loss in their last eight league matches, and head coach Eric Quill said he was especially proud of how his players held on against Seattle late in the game.
“The last 20 minutes were what I was most proud of,” Quill said. He praised players for continuing to “give everything they had,” blocking shots and defending Seattle’s pressure even as fatigue set in.
Quill described Seattle as a difficult opponent and said the reaction to the Charlotte defeat was exactly what Dallas needed before heading to Houston. The Seattle win also marked Dallas’ third clean sheet in four matches; the team had recorded only four shutouts across its first 25 matches of the 2026 MLS regular season.

Houston arrive on a five-game winless run
The Dynamo remain fifth in the West but have gone five matches without a victory, drawing three and losing two. Their latest outing was a 3-3 draw with San Diego FC, in which they surrendered a late lead.
Guilherme scored twice and supplied an assist against San Diego, taking his 2026 league tally to 16 goals and nine assists. Houston coach Ben Olsen acknowledged the Brazilian’s importance while warning that the side cannot depend so heavily on one player.
“He's carried a big load for us – it's too much,” Olsen said, adding that Houston must work to take some of the pressure off him. He said it was nevertheless valuable to have a player capable of delivering when the team needed a decisive contribution.
Dallas’ match-winner against Seattle was Kaick, who has scored three times in his last seven appearances. The source reports that he had also scored three goals across his first 49 regular-season MLS appearances, matching that earlier total during his recent run.
Recent history points to a close contest
Dallas ended an 11-match winless streak in Houston with a 2-1 victory at Shell Energy Stadium in February 2025, their first away win against the Dynamo since 2016. Houston have won three of the last 13 meetings between the clubs in Houston, while eight ended level.
Dallas have won seven of their last 11 regular-season matches, with two draws and two defeats. Houston, by contrast, have only one win in their last nine, despite a five-match winning streak earlier in the season. The pre-match forecast gives Houston a 38.2% chance of victory, a draw 26.5%, and Dallas 35.3%.
