Hardik Pandya Shifts Training Base to Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence
A Strategic Move for Career Longevity
India's star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has made a significant lifestyle and career change by relocating from Mumbai to Bengaluru. In a move that marks a shift in how high-profile Indian cricketers approach their training, Pandya has chosen to make the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (COE) his primary base for the foreseeable future.
While the COE has traditionally served as a facility for injury rehabilitation, fitness testing, and national team camps, Pandya is the first active, high-profile cricketer to permanently base himself near the facility. For the past decade, the 32-year-old had lived in Mumbai, primarily utilizing the Mumbai Indians' training facility in Ghansoli.
Reasons Behind the Relocation
The decision was driven by a combination of logistical convenience and the need for world-class medical and training support. Pandya has spent a significant amount of time at the COE over the last six months while recovering from a quadriceps injury, which subsequently ruled him out of India's current white-ball tour of the UK.
A BCCI source informed PTI, "Hardik has already permanently shifted to Bengaluru. He has rented a property on the outskirts of the city, close to the COE. He will be the first Indian cricketer to make the COE his permanent training base for the remainder of his career."
The source further explained that the daily commute from his residence in Lower Parel, Mumbai, had become a hurdle. By moving to Bengaluru, Pandya gains streamlined access to injury management and skills training provided by the centrally-contracted facilities.
Future Outlook and Support System
Pandya's commitment to the white-ball format remains strong. According to sources, the India vice-captain intends to continue playing international white-ball cricket for another five to six years. To support this goal, he is expected to maintain a dedicated personal team in Bengaluru, including his own physiotherapist and a strength and conditioning (S&C) coach.
Interestingly, Pandya's dedication to his craft extends to his own expenses; the source noted that "even when he does skill work, such as batting against net bowlers hired by the COE, Hardik pays them from his own pocket."
Recovery Status
Pandya is currently continuing his rehabilitation programme. While he recently took a short break for personal reasons, he is expected to return to the COE shortly. His availability for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe remains uncertain, pending the successful completion of the BCCI's Return-to-Play protocols.
