Chelsea head to Lyon for Champions League measuring stick

Chelsea travel to Lyon aiming for a second straight Women's Champions League win, with Lucy Bronze insisting the trip is a perfect opportunity to "prove ourselves" against one of the competition's giants.

The Blues began their European campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Austria Wien and sit on three points alongside five other sides. Lyon also won their opener, thrashing Servette 8-0 to sit top of the early standings.

In head-to-head history, Lyon have won two of their four games against Chelsea, drawing one and losing one. Among sides they have faced more than twice, only Juventus and Umea IK have a better win rate against Lyon than Chelsea, who hold a 50% win rate against the French champions.

Bronze relishes reunion with former club

Bronze, who played for Lyon, is looking forward to the clash against her former side.

"It's so exciting," Bronze said, as quoted on Chelsea's website. "My time at Lyon was amazing."

"All the girls, Ellie [Carpenter], Keish [Kadeisha Buchanan] and Melvine [Malard] had a great time at Lyon, and we all actually played there together as well."

"We're excited to go there, to be focused on the Champions League, and we know what pedigree Lyon have in the Champions League. To go toe to toe with another team who's one of the best in the world and test ourselves and prove ourselves is going to be exciting."

Form and expectations

Chelsea have lost three of their last six away games in the Champions League, though all three defeats came in the knockout stages. In the group/league phase, the Blues have lost just one of 15 away matches, winning 11 and drawing three.

The Opta supercomputer makes Lyon heavy favourites, giving them a 65.2% win probability to Chelsea's 15.9%.

Bronze is not shying away from the challenge.

"It's great. I love playing in the big games, the challenging games," she added. "That's what the best players in the world want to do. They want to play for the best teams, to be able to compete for trophies, to compete in the league. That's exactly what we're doing this season. We're pushing ourselves in every single game to be able to compete and win every trophy we can."
