Chennai Super Kings appoint Mohit Sharma as new bowling coach
Former India pacer Mohit Sharma is set to make his return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a new capacity, joining head coach Zaheer Khan's backroom staff as the franchise's new bowling coach starting next season.
The 38-year-old replaces Eric Simmons in the role following recommendations from new head coach Zaheer Khan. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the development, outlining the franchise's confidence in Sharma's tactical depth and familiarity with the team culture.
"Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach," Viswanathan said. "The next set of coaching staff will also be recruited on Zaheer's recommendation in the coming weeks."
A Storied IPL Career and Proven Track Record
Sharma brings extensive Indian Premier League (IPL) experience to the Chennai camp. Across 120 IPL matches, the Haryana seamer claimed 134 wickets. He enjoyed two previous stints as a player with CSK across four seasons, most notably winning the Purple Cap in 2014 after taking 23 wickets.
After playing for Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, Sharma underwent a remarkable career resurgence with Gujarat Titans, capturing 41 wickets across two seasons with his trademark variations, back-of-the-hand slower balls, and yorkers.
At international level, Sharma represented India in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is, picking up 31 and six wickets respectively, and served as a key bowler during India's run to the semi-finals of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup under MS Dhoni's leadership.
Sharma officially announced his retirement from all formats of professional cricket in December, stating: "From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing."
