Alonso on when Aston Martin expect performance step forward

Fernando Alonso Hints at Future Performance Gains for Aston Martin

Following a mixed performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has given insight into when Aston Martin can expect a significant step forward in performance. The two-time World Champion, who retired from the race due to a seat issue, noted that the team has shown signs of improvement but will need to wait for upcoming upgrades to see a boost in pace.

Positive Signs in Montreal

Alonso expressed optimism after the team's performance in Montreal, where they showed better pace compared to previous races. He highlighted the team's strategic decision to start on soft tyres, which allowed them to compete within the top 10 early in the race. However, a technical issue forced his retirement on Lap 23.

"We had a good start and we were fighting into the top 10 positions," Alonso said. "We made the right call starting on the soft tyres, with a few others opting for intermediates and then having to pit early. Unfortunately, we had an issue with the seat in the race, so we decided to retire the car."

Looking Ahead to Upgrades

Alonso acknowledged that the team will need to wait for performance upgrades around the summer break to see a step forward. Until then, the team will focus on optimising their current package.

"We need to wait for performance to come with our upgrades around the summer break, but we will look to keep optimising this package until then," he added.

Optimism for Monaco

With the Monaco Grand Prix approaching, Alonso shared his thoughts on why he has extra hope for the upcoming race. The circuit's characteristics, which are less dependent on engine performance, may provide an opportunity for the team to show improvement.

"Monaco is next – a very different circuit, very slow," Alonso said. "The engine will be a little bit less important there, so maybe extra hope for Monaco."

Stroll's Perspective

On the other side of the Aston Martin garage, Lance Stroll admitted that the team still has work to do to reach the desired level of performance. He highlighted struggles with tyre temperatures and grip during the race, which affected their pace on the straights.

"It's been a difficult weekend in Montreal," Stroll said. "We couldn't get the temperatures we needed into the tyres and we were struggling for grip throughout the race. The car performance isn't where we need it to be, and there's still a lot of work to do to get us there."

As the team looks ahead, they will focus on addressing the issues identified in Montreal and preparing for the European leg of the season, starting with Monaco.
