Joao Cancelo nears Al-Hilal exit as Barcelona return moves closer

Barcelona move edges closer for Cancelo

Joao Cancelo is reportedly nearing a return to Barcelona after Al-Hilal moved closer to agreeing a termination of his contract, potentially allowing the Portugal defender to join the Catalan club as a free agent.

Barcelona and Al-Hilal have been negotiating throughout the summer. The Saudi Pro League side had reportedly been seeking a transfer fee of between €10 million and €15 million for Cancelo, whose existing contract runs until 2027.

However, Saudi sports newspaper Arriyadiyah and reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih have provided a fresh update that could significantly change the situation. According to the report: “Al-Hilal nears the signing of contract termination agreement with Cancelo, paving the way for his signing with Spanish club Barcelona.”

Cancelo wants to stay at Barcelona

Cancelo has made clear that he wants to remain at Barcelona after enjoying a second loan spell at Camp Nou last season. A contract termination would remove the need for Barcelona to pay the previously reported transfer fee and could clear the way for the defender to return before the new La Liga campaign begins.

The 31-year-old was absent from Al-Hilal’s opening match of the season. After the game, manager Simone Inzaghi said that Cancelo’s future was a matter for the club’s board, adding to uncertainty over the defender’s immediate plans.

No final agreement has been officially confirmed, but the reported progress in talks gives Barcelona renewed hope of completing Cancelo’s return.
