Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter has lauded the rapid development and impressive form of young winger Puso Dithejane ahead of Sunday's clash against the Portland Timbers at Soldier Field.

Dithejane has emerged as a key figure in Chicago's strong run of form, firing a decisive brace in their 2-1 victory over Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul to seal qualification for the Leagues Cup quarter-finals. The 22-year-old forward has also notched a goal and an assist across three MLS appearances in 2026, including finding the back of the net against Inter Miami.

Speaking about the winger's steady progress, Berhalter highlighted the player's dedication during training and his sharp instincts in front of goal.

"We see it every day in training, we see what he does," Berhalter said. "When we came back from the World Cup break, we had a chance to go home, and we played a couple of friendly games and we’re training, and every day he’s scoring goals.

"He’s a dynamic player and gets in good spots. He still needs to develop and still has got a long way to go, but there’s a ton of potential in him and I'm happy for him. He was the coach’s man of the match [against Cruz Azul]."

Chicago, sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference, enter the contest riding a four-match winning streak across all competitions. However, they face a resolute Portland Timbers side who remain unbeaten in four MLS outings since the World Cup break (W3 D1).

Playmaker Philip Zinckernagel continues to orchestrate Chicago's attack. In the Fire's recent win over Charlotte FC, Zinckernagel registered his 20th regular-season game with an assist since the start of last season, matching elite company alongside Carles Gil (20) and Anders Dreyer (21).

Portland will present a major threat of their own through Kevin Kelsy, who has scored in three straight regular-season matches—the first Timbers player to achieve that feat since Jonathan Rodríguez in 2024. Kelsy now aims to join Diego Valeri, Brian Fernandez, and Felipe Mora as the only Portland players to score in four consecutive regular-season games.
