Williams Reserve Driver Luke Browning to Make FP1 Debut in Barcelona and Austria

Williams reserve driver Luke Browning will participate in Free Practice 1 sessions during the Barcelona and Austrian Grand Prix weekends, marking his first opportunities to drive the team's 2026 Formula 1 car. The 24-year-old, who joined the Williams Driver Academy in 2023, has previously driven in FP1 sessions for Williams in Bahrain, Mexico, and Abu Dhabi. This latest opportunity is part of F1's initiative to provide rookies with experience in official sessions.

Background on Browning's Career

Browning, who is currently competing in Japan's Super Formula series with Team Kondo Racing, has had a successful career in Formula 2, finishing fourth in the 2024 standings with Hitech GP. His achievements include nine podiums, including a win at the Feature Race in Monza. This season, he has achieved a best result of fourth in Super Formula.

Williams' Support and Development

Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets praised Browning for his contributions to the team, both in the simulator and on track. "Luke continues to prove himself as a valuable part of the team, both through his simulator work and his performances on track," Smeets said. "Giving him his first opportunity to get behind the wheel of the FW48 across two race weekends is an important step in his development and a natural progression."

F1 Regulations and Team Strategy

Under F1 regulations, every full-time driver is required to make way for a rookie in two practice sessions across the 2026 season. Alex Albon will hand over his car to Browning for this weekend's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, while Carlos Sainz will step aside at the Austrian Grand Prix two weeks later. Browning expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, "I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the FW48 for the first time, and to have two opportunities to experience the car first-hand in the European season makes it even more special."

Browning has already taken part in official F1 sessions during his career, having also driven for Williams in FP1 at Bahrain, Mexico and Abu Dhabi last season, as well as Abu Dhabi in 2024. He is determined to make the most of these sessions to help the team prepare for the upcoming race weekends.

"I've been working hard to prepare so that I can make the most of these sessions and help the team plan and prepare for the race weekends ahead. I’m incredibly thankful to everyone at Atlassian Williams F1 Team for their continued trust and support, and I can’t wait to get out on track," Browning added.

Future Prospects

Williams is committed to developing young talent, and Browning's inclusion in FP1 sessions is a testament to the team's investment in its driver academy. The opportunity to drive the FW48 in Barcelona and Austria is expected to provide valuable experience for Browning as he continues his journey in motorsport.
