Toto Wolff Opens Up About Mercedes Dilemma After Monaco Podium

Wolff's Rare Podium Appearance

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff made a rare appearance on the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix and revealed his mixed emotions about celebrating Kimi Antonelli's victory while George Russell suffered another difficult weekend. The Austrian, who lives in Monaco, hadn't been on a podium for 10 years due to the awkwardness of celebrating one driver's success while the other struggles.

"I haven't gone to a podium for 10 years because it's always difficult to balance between one side of the garage being happy, the other one not," Wolff explained. "Today I couldn't avoid it because the board member that I wanted to go to has said he needs to catch a flight, and then the team said, you've got to go, it's the home place. While standing there, I'm always with mixed feelings."

Russell's Difficult Season Continues

George Russell's failure to score points at Monaco has extended the gap between the Mercedes teammates to 68 points in the championship. The Briton has now gone four races without a podium and lost second place in the drivers' standings to his former team-mate Hamilton.

Wolff acknowledged Russell's misfortune: "The Montreal race was his to win. We let him down. In Monaco, probably we could have had a podium if not for the penalty mistake."

In Monaco, Russell was unfortunate to receive a contentious pit lane speeding penalty, which Mercedes then compounded by failing to serve correctly, earning him a more severe drive-through penalty that dropped him from third to outside the points.

Wolff Backs Russell

Despite the difficult spell, Wolff remains firmly supportive of Russell's abilities: "It's not a question of not knowing how to drive. It's about having a car on the knees that you feel confident with and that you can go fast. And that's the fact. Formula 1 is about physics and not mystics. You don't unlearn how to drive, and you don't become a miracle wonder driver. I'm not stressed at all for his performances because he's one of the best."

Wolff suggested Russell must look to last year's title battle for inspiration, during which Oscar Piastri appeared set for glory before a poor run ultimately saw him lose out to his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

"I've talked with him on Saturday and Sunday - this is a long championship," Wolff added. "Last year, I remember people saying, well, Piastri has won that. It's not necessarily only about one year, but it's many years. Luck swings your direction, and then sometimes it doesn't."

Antonelli Exceeds Expectations

While Russell struggles, Antonelli has exceeded all expectations in his rookie season, claiming the first five wins of his career in succession. The Italian teenager has established himself as the clear championship favourite, with his latest victory coming through flawless execution in one of Formula 1's most demanding races.

The Monaco victory marks Antonelli's first on the streets of Monte Carlo and demonstrates his remarkable adaptation to the unique challenges of street circuit racing. With the championship now heading to Barcelona-Catalunya next weekend, Russell will be hoping for a reversal of fortune while Antonelli looks to extend his winning streak to six.
