Fernando Alonso Sets Summer Deadline for Decision on F1 Future
Fernando Alonso, the veteran two-time world champion currently driving for Aston Martin, has established a timeline for one of the most anticipated decisions in the Formula 1 paddock: whether he will continue racing into the 2027 season.
The Timeline for Decision
Now in the final year of his contract with Aston Martin, Alonso—who turns 45 in July—stated that he expects to make a definitive choice following the August summer break. Despite a challenging start to the current era of rules for Aston Martin and engine supplier Honda, the Spaniard remains optimistic about his capabilities.
Speaking at the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso explained his current mindset: "Sometime in the summer, I need to make a decision. At the moment I didn't sit with myself to think about that... I need to speak with my family as well."
Alonso emphasized that his decision will depend partly on the technical progress of the car. "If I continue racing, I think it will be a better season than this one with the project in year two," he noted, adding that he remains deeply linked to the Aston Martin project even if he eventually steps away from the cockpit.
The Impact of Fatherhood
A significant new factor in Alonso's deliberations is his transition into fatherhood. In March, Alonso and partner Melissa Jimenez welcomed their first child, a boy. The driver admitted that this life change has shifted his perspective on the future.
"I have some thoughts, I cannot lie. It does change the way you see life," Alonso revealed. "I want to race so he sees me racing. I would like not to stop before he is in the paddock, or he sits in my car, and this kind of thing."
Defining the 'Right' Moment to Retire
For Alonso, the decision to retire isn't just about a specific date, but about maintaining his standard of performance. He expressed a strong desire to exit the sport while he is still operating at his peak, rather than fading away.
"I want to leave the sport one day when I feel fast. I don't want to leave the sport when I've been beaten by everyone, I feel slow and I make mistakes," Alonso stated, reflecting on the rarity of drivers retiring at the absolute top, such as Nico Rosberg in 2016.
Life After Formula 1
Regardless of the outcome of his F1 contract, Alonso's passion for motorsport remains undiminished. He has already hinted at several paths for his post-F1 career, including a return to the Dakar Rally or competing in endurance racing.
The driver mentioned his recent experience with the Aston Martin Valkyrie prototype and the allure of achieving a unique triple crown of sorts: "If one day I can win endurance racing, Formula 1 and rally cross country, that will be probably unprecedented and that's something that is very appealing."
Alonso remains confident that his current form ensures he is still an asset to his team, having outqualified teammate Lance Stroll for 40 consecutive Grands Prix.
