India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and Sri Lanka fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk have both downplayed a heated confrontation between opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and pacer Asitha Fernando on Day 1 of the Colombo Test, attributing the clash to the intense competitive nature of Test cricket.

The flashpoint occurred during the morning session after Fernando bowled Jaiswal in an eventful over that had previously seen the Indian batter strike three boundaries. As Fernando celebrated the breakthrough with teammates, he appeared to direct a send-off at Jaiswal.

The remarks triggered an immediate reaction from Jaiswal, who turned back and marched directly toward Fernando. The two players came face-to-face in an exchange that nearly resulted in a clash of heads before Sri Lankan fielders stepped in to separate the pair and escort Jaiswal off the pitch.

Coaches Reflect on 'Heat of the Moment' Clash

Addressing the altercation after play, Kotak admitted that Jaiswal should have maintained his distance despite the provocation.

"I think the bowler commented something and it happened in the heat of moment," Kotak said. "Obviously Jaiswal shouldn’t have gone so close to him but it happened in the heat of the moment."

Sri Lanka's fast bowling coach Van Niekerk echoed those sentiments, defending his bowler's competitive fire while acknowledging the verbal escalation.

"Look it is hard Test cricket, isn't it? When you're coming up against a team like India, you can't sit on the back foot and just bowl at them. I think from our side, it's bringing the challenge all the time, trying to make sure we can create something," Van Niekerk explained.

"And so, from my point of view, I've really asked the bowlers to stand up and create something. The verbals are probably an overflow of emotion. I'll leave that to the match referee to deal with."

Match Referee Review Looms

Despite both camps attempting to move past the altercation, ICC match referee Andy Pycroft is expected to review the video footage. Under the ICC Code of Conduct, send-offs and aggressive physical proximity or inappropriate physical contact carry strict penalties, leaving both Fernando and Jaiswal at risk of sanctions.
