Newlands pairs Cape Town’s mountain setting with a rare spin-friendly surface
A landmark ground beneath Table Mountain
Set against the Table Mountain range, Newlands is one of cricket’s most scenic venues. The Cape Town ground has hosted international cricket since 1889, when it staged its first Test, between South Africa and England.
A distinctive South African pitch
Newlands is also notable for being among the few South African venues regarded as offering assistance to spinners. It is home to Western Province Cricket and the Cape Cobras.
The ground’s character has traditionally come from its mix of large stands and grassy embankments. Some of those open areas have gradually been replaced by larger concrete stands as the venue expands its capacity. Its setting—mountains on one side and breweries nearby—remains central to its appeal for spectators.
