Jansen left searching for answers after NYCFC's 'inexcusable' collapse against Philadelphia

NYCFC Collapse Against Philadelphia in 'Inexcusable' Second-Half Meltdown

New York City FC suffered a stunning second-half collapse against the Philadelphia Union, surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 in what head coach Pascal Jansen described as an performance to be ashamed of.

NYCFC were cruising after a dominant first half, with Luighi Hanri's penalty putting them in a commanding position. But the wheels came off after the restart, as the Union struck three times to complete a remarkable turnaround and condemn the visitors to their first MLS defeat since returning from the World Cup break.

Pascal Jansen, NYCFC head coach

The loss compounded what has been a difficult period for the club, following a disappointing Leagues Cup campaign in which they managed just one win from three group games. It also marked their second consecutive match without a victory in MLS play, having returned from the World Cup break with back-to-back wins before going winless in their last two (D1 L1).

Despite the setback, NYCFC remain in the Eastern Conference playoff places, sitting seventh. However, the manner of the defeat left Jansen visibly searching for explanations.

"I don't have an answer," Jansen admitted. "Never expected what I saw in the second half. Sometimes you can drop a level; that can happen, but what happened in the second half is something to be ashamed of."

He continued: "When you're controlling the game, like we did in the first half without any issues, maybe once or twice where we got caught off guard, but from 2-0 up, you keep a clean sheet. Within a couple of minutes [of the restart, the ball is] in the back of the net, but what happens after is inexcusable."

Hanri had been one of NYCFC's brightest sparks on the day, finishing the match with a team-high four shots and eight touches in the opposition box, while also winning 11 of his 22 contested duels — both team-high figures.

Quick Turnaround: Cincinnati Looms

NYCFC have little time to dwell on the Philadelphia debacle, with FC Cincinnati awaiting next. Cincinnati sit one point and one place above NYCFC in the Eastern Conference, having let a lead of their own slip in a 1-1 draw with Orlando City SC.

Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan felt the draw was a fair reflection of a physically demanding contest against an Orlando side with a formidable home record this season.

"These guys put everything into that game, and you could see it at the end, just the physical toll that it took on everybody on both sides," Noonan said. "Orlando's a strong team and in good form, and I think the way the game played out, it felt fair."

"I think it showed the extreme of, as the game opened up, how hard it is for the guys to recover from mistakes or a move breaking down, but we have to be okay with a point."

Players to Watch

FC Cincinnati — Evander: The Brazilian has been a revelation for Cincinnati in 2026, sitting joint-top of their scoring charts with 11 goals (level with Kevin Denkey) while also leading the team with 11 assists. Though he failed to find the net against Orlando last time out, he was instrumental in their last home match — a 4-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes — where he racked up three assists and a goal while creating seven chances overall.

New York City FC — Luighi Hanri: Hanri's penalty had put NYCFC in the driving seat against Philadelphia before the second-half collapse. His attacking output — four shots, eight touches in the box, and 11 duels won — made him the most involved player on his side, and he will need to replicate that intensity against Cincinnati.

Match Prediction

Despite NYCFC's historical dominance in this fixture — unbeaten in their last five MLS meetings with Cincinnati dating back to October 2024 — momentum favours the hosts. The most recent encounter between the two sides ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw in April, when Evander's 95th-minute penalty snatched a dramatic point for Cincinnati, who scored twice in stoppage time.

Cincinnati have lost just one of their last six MLS matches and have won each of their last three at home, scoring 14 goals in that stretch since a 5-3 loss to Inter Miami. The Opta win probability gives Cincinnati the edge at 48.3%, with a draw at 22.8% and an NYCFC victory at 28.9%.
