Newcastle complete £29.5m signing of Benfica defender Amar Dedic

Newcastle United have completed the signing of right-back Amar Dedic from Benfica in a deal worth a reported £29.5 million (€34.5m).

The 24-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international has committed his future to St. James' Park by signing a five-year contract, becoming the Magpies' sixth signing of the summer transfer window.

The move sees Dedic reunite with Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle. The pair previously worked together in Austria during Jaissle's managerial stints at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg.

"It's a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United," Dedic told the club's official website. "I'm really happy to be here and can't wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.

"Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I'm really happy to be playing for him again. Playing Premier League football at St. James' Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I'm really excited to get started."

Dedic arrives in the Premier League following a single season in Portugal with Benfica, where he made 44 appearances in all competitions, including 14 in the UEFA Champions League. In the Primeira Liga, he registered one goal and four assists as Benfica went through the domestic league season undefeated, ultimately finishing third.

The defender is expected to slot straight into Newcastle's starting lineup at right-back to fill the void left by Kieran Trippier, who joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer earlier in the window.

Newcastle and Jaissle face a challenging schedule to open their campaign, hosting Liverpool before a trip to face Tottenham Hotspur, with an EFL Cup clash against West Bromwich Albion sandwiched in between.
