Alexia Putellas finds her rhythm as London City Lionesses see off Brighton

The sigh of relief

There was almost a sigh of relief from Alexia Putellas as she watched the ball fly past the Brighton goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, before turning to the crowd in celebration. The weight of expectation has been heavy for the Spaniard since she arrived at London City Lionesses in July, and it has taken her time to settle.

The 2-0 win against Brighton featured her best performance in a London City shirt as she began to dictate play from central areas. Putellas created the most chances of anyone on the pitch and her goal gave Eder Maestre's side something to build on as they continue to show progress. According to FotMob, it was her first goal for the club, giving her one goal and one assist from four WSL appearances this season.

Brighton still searching for a striker

Brighton continued to look bright in phases, but struggled to create anything of note. A core problem is their lack of versatility in attack: they still lack a proper striker, a hole in their squad that has persisted for almost a year and is hampering their progress.

The result lifted London City to fourth in the WSL table on nine points from four games.
