Haji Wright out up to 12 weeks with quad injury, dealing blow to Coventry and USMNT

Coventry City and the United States men's national team have been dealt a significant early-season blow, with striker Haji Wright ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury.

Coventry coach Frank Lampard confirmed the news ahead of the Premier League campaign, delivering a stark prognosis for the 28-year-old forward.

"He won't be available for a little while, he's got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us," Lampard said via Coventry's website. "It's certainly going to be a number of weeks, could even be up to 12 weeks."

A delayed Premier League debut

Coventry's promotion to the Premier League was supposed to give Wright his first taste of top-flight English football. Instead, the setback could keep him sidelined until potentially the fall, depending on the severity of the injury.

The American was in outstanding form in the Championship last season, scoring 17 goals with one assist in just over 2,500 minutes for the Sky Blues. It marked his sixth consecutive season reaching double-digit goals across three different leagues — the Danish Superliga, the Turkish Super Lig and the English Championship.

Coventry has already fortified its forward line this summer with the additions of Taiwo Awoniyi and Sidiki Chérif, softening the immediate impact of Wright's absence.

What it means for the USMNT

Wright's versatility — he can operate both as a striker and as a winger — has long made him a valuable utility piece in the U.S. setup. The 6ft 2in (188cm) forward was a member of the U.S. World Cup squads in 2022 and 2026, appearing in all four matches in Qatar and scoring against the Netherlands in a knockout loss. At the 2026 World Cup under Mauricio Pochettino, however, he played just two minutes across two games, coming off the bench in the final moments of a 2-0 win over Australia and in the U.S.'s 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.

Patrick Agyemang's injury had opened the door for Wright's World Cup return, but his limited minutes signaled a decreasing role in the national team pool. Now, Wright appears likely to miss four U.S. friendlies in the September-October window, including a meeting with rivals Mexico, as well as Concacaf Nations League games in November.

Agyemang is expected to return to the field in the winter, while Red Bull New York teenager Julian Hall Zakrzewski — who is also eligible for Poland and has nine goals and five assists for Red Bull this season — is pushing to break into Pochettino's picture this fall.

For the upcoming international windows, Pochettino will have forwards Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi as options, alongside newcomers like Hall Zakrzewski and veterans such as Vancouver's Brian White, who has 10 goals this season.
