Leicester's Relegation Fears Deepen After Failed Appeal Against Six-Point Deduction
Leicester City's fears of suffering back-to-back relegations have intensified after the club's unsuccessful appeal against a six-point deduction for breaching English Football League (EFL) financial regulations.
The Foxes, relegated from the Premier League last season, were handed the penalty in February for violations of financial fairness rules. Initially charged under the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules in May 2023, the case was later transferred to the EFL jurisdiction following their relegation. Despite challenging the sanction, an independent appeal board has upheld the deduction, leaving Leicester rooted in the Championship's relegation zone.
Currently sitting in 22nd place with 41 points, Leicester occupy the final relegation spot—level on points with 23rd-placed Oxford United but ahead on goal difference, and just one point behind 21st-placed Portsmouth. With only five fixtures left in the season, the pressure is mounting on the newly appointed head coach Gary Rowett, who took charge on a short-term basis in February.
Leicester's next crucial match is a home clash against Swansea City at the King Power Stadium this Saturday, marking the beginning of their final push for survival.
"With the matter now at an end and five games of the season remaining, everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us and on shaping the outcome of our season through our results on the pitch,"
— Leicester City statement
The club expressed gratitude to their supporters, acknowledging the challenging period while emphasizing renewed focus on the pitch:
"We know this has been a challenging period, and we thank our supporters for the backing they continue to give the team. The responsibility now is to ensure these remaining games are approached with the focus and intent our current situation demands."
Notably, the Premier League also attempted to escalate the punishment, appealing for a harsher penalty against Leicester. However, the appeal board dismissed this request as well, effectively closing the book on legal challenges related to the case—at least for now.
As the Championship season reaches its climax, Leicester City must now rely solely on on-field performance to avoid a historic second successive drop—a scenario that would mark a dramatic fall for the 2016 Premier League champions.
