Saudi Pro League Sanctions Al-Taawoun Following Offensive Diogo Jota Chants at Rúben Neves

Saudi Arabian football authorities have issued stadium bans and financial penalties following an outcry sparked by offensive fan chants targeting Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves regarding his late teammate Diogo Jota.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Rúben Neves

The incident occurred in the aftermath of Al-Hilal’s 6-0 away victory over Al-Taawoun, a match where Ollie Watkins and Gabriel Martinelli combined for five goals. Following the final whistle, a group of home supporters in the stands directed chants toward Neves, referencing his former Portugal and Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in July 2025.

Neves, visibly distressed by the taunts, gestured to the crowd that "God is watching you" before telling reporters after the match: "I hope they don’t go to pray afterwards."

Ronaldo and Saudi Legends Demand Action

The incident prompted immediate widespread condemnation, led by Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Taking to Instagram, where he commands 680 million followers, Ronaldo called on football authorities to take a hardline stance against such conduct.

“The league must take action and punish this kind of fan behaviour,” Ronaldo wrote. “This is no longer football, and there have to be limits. People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again.”

Prominent figures within Saudi sports media and football history echoed the sentiment. Broadcaster Waleed al-Farraj commented: “To shout ‘Messi’ at Ronaldo is acceptable within the context of the rivalry between them, but to chant the name of his deceased teammate Jota at Neves is an inappropriate act. How can you play on people’s grief like this? You should have some humanity.”

Former Saudi international and Wolves player Sami al-Jaber also delivered a message of solidarity to Neves: “Rúben, your presence in Saudi football means a great deal to us. As Saudis, we take pride in our values of respect and hospitality … they transcend any sporting rivalry. This behaviour does not reflect those values. I hope you know how warmly you are regarded here, and how much you belong.”

Sanctions and Global Scrutiny

Following an official complaint lodged by Al-Hilal, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) and the Saudi Pro League (SPL) issued disciplinary measures against Al-Taawoun. The club was fined approximately £20,000 and ordered to play two matches behind closed doors.

In a joint statement, the governing bodies condemned the “unacceptable conduct,” reiterating that “exploiting personal tragedies for the purpose of abuse or provocation is unacceptable behaviour that has no place in Saudi football.”

Al-Taawoun also condemned the chants, describing them as isolated and unrepresentative of their wider supporter base.

The controversy highlights the growing global scrutiny surrounding the Saudi Pro League as it prepares to host upcoming major international tournaments, including the Asian Cup and the 2034 World Cup. Sports governance experts have warned that leagues expanding onto the global stage must enforce strict stadium regulations to manage fan culture and protect players from targeted abuse.
