Porto's home blank leaves Farioli admitting: 'There's something we need to do better'

Porto's fourth straight defeat as Dragao drought deepens

Porto's 1-0 loss to PSV at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday extended a grim Champions League run: Francesco Farioli's side have now lost each of their last four matches in the competition, their joint-longest run of defeats along with a four-game sequence between November 2021 and September 2022.

Having failed to score against Manchester City on matchday one and now against PSV, Porto have also been blanked in consecutive home matches in the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2004-05.

Chances created, points dropped

The hosts had their openings. Oskar Pietuszewski shot wide early on after an error from PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar, and after Guus Til's 57th-minute opener, Hwang In-Beom seized on another poor ball from Kovar and squared for Andre Silva, whose shot was brilliantly stopped by the goalkeeper. Victor Froholdt's follow-up on the rebound was cleared off the line.

Alberto Costa was later denied by a last-ditch Sergino Dest tackle as Porto pressed in vain.

"Honestly, the feeling is that even if we'd played for another 25 minutes, we would have created dangerous situations but still wouldn't have scored," Farioli conceded. "That's the feeling we had, and of course it's frustrating. We created enough to deserve more than a defeat.

"In the second half, I think we had a very positive reaction and did enough to deserve a different result.

"But this is the third time I've come here after a Champions League game and said we deserved a different result, yet we're still not getting it. So there's definitely something we need to do better."

The wider picture

PSV's win — their first in Europe away in Portugal since March 1975 — moved Peter Bosz's men to four points from three games, with Bosz declaring afterwards that his team are "back in the mix" in the competition.

For Porto, the search for a first Champions League point of the campaign continues, and the manner of this defeat — plenty of territory, no goal, and a familiar post-match lament — leaves Farioli with questions to answer before the next matchday.
