Devdutt Padikkal registered a commanding 167 to put India in a commanding position at 460 for 9 before Sri Lanka’s spinners mounted a resilient fightback on a rain-interrupted second day of the first Test in Galle.

A wet outfield and morning downpours delayed the start of play by nearly five hours, with action finally getting underway at 2:35 PM local time. Resuming from an overnight score of 288 for 2, India lost seven wickets for 172 runs across the two truncated sessions, but contributions from the middle and lower order ensured the visitors built a formidable first-innings total.

Padikkal Joins Elite Company

Resuming on an overnight score of 131, Padikkal played with composure at No. 3, ultimately compiling 167 off 230 balls, laced with 15 boundaries and a six. In doing so, the 24-year-old became only the third Indian batter to score 150 or more against Sri Lanka from the No. 3 position, joining Rahul Dravid (177) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153).

Padikkal’s marathon stay finally ended when left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya deceived him in flight; the batter stepped down the track, missed the delivery, and was cleanly stumped by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. Padikkal walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd and teammates alike.

Nuwantha and Jayasuriya Spark Sri Lanka Fightback

India experienced early blows following the resumption. Rishabh Pant fell for 39 off 62 balls, mistiming a lofted shot off debutant Keshara Nuwantha to mid-off. KL Rahul, who had retired hurt due to cramps on 77 on Day 1, returned to the crease but added only five runs before flicking a turning delivery from Nuwantha to short leg to depart for 82.

Nuwantha struck again after tea by trapping Ravindra Jadeja leg-before for 13, reducing India to 377 for 6. Jayasuriya proved to be Sri Lanka’s standout bowler with 4 for 109 from 39 overs, while Nuwantha claimed 3 for 175.

Jurel and Suthar Power India Past 450

Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel stepped up to stabilize the innings, constructing a brisk 51 off 68 balls featuring four fours and a six. Dropped on 29 at slip by Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Jurel took full advantage and combined with Manav Suthar (24) for a vital 55-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Dhananjaya later atoned for his dropped catch by grabbing a sharp rebound at slip off Jayasuriya to dismiss Jurel shortly after his half-century. Useful tail-end runs from Mohammed Siraj (11) and an unbeaten 13-run stand between Kuldeep Yadav (12*) and Prasidh Krishna (1*) guided India to 460 for 9 when stumps were called.

Speaking after the day's play, Jurel highlighted the team’s tactical approach during the shortened sessions:

"There was a plan to score runs briskly, but sensibly. We weren’t looking to go bonkers from ball one, but there was a plan. Devdutt scores whenever he gets a chance."

Looking ahead to bowling on the Galle surface, Jurel added: "We need to bowl long spells here and be consistent with lengths. We need to take 20 wickets."
