Habibul Bashar Appointed Chairman of Bangladesh's New Selection Panel

Habibul Bashar Takes Helm of BCB's Revamped Selection Panel

In a significant move aimed at bolstering Bangladesh cricket's leadership structure, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former national captain Habibul Bashar as chairman of its newly restructured four-member selection panel. The announcement, made on Monday, marks a new chapter in the nation's cricket administration as it gears up for key international events, including the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.

Experienced Team to Guide National Squad

The newly constituted panel will remain in place until the final squad for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup—scheduled to be hosted in Africa in October-November 2027—is selected. Cricbuzz had earlier reported that Bashar was likely to lead a restructured four-member panel, an expansion from the previous trio, a development now confirmed by the BCB in an official statement.

"Bashar, 53, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as a national selector for both the Bangladesh men's and women's teams," the BCB said. "A prolific batsman in his playing days, Bashar holds the distinction of being the first Bangladeshi to surpass 3000 runs in Test cricket and remains one of the country's most respected cricketing figures." Bashar represented Bangladesh in 50 Tests and 111 ODIs, and his leadership on and off the field has long been celebrated across the cricketing community.

New Panel Members Announced

Joining Bashar on the panel is former fast bowler Hasibul Hossain, who was part of the previous selection committee chaired by Gazi Ashraf Hossain since September 2025. This continuity is expected to ensure a smooth transition in selection policies and player evaluations.

The panel also includes two prominent domestic stalwarts: Naeem Islam and Nadif Chowdhury. Naeem Islam, 39, enjoyed a prolific two-decade career during which he amassed over 20,000 runs across formats. He currently holds the national record for the most first-class centuries by a Bangladeshi cricketer, with an impressive 34 hundreds.

Nadif Chowdhury, 38, brings with him extensive playing experience that includes representing Bangladesh in T20 internationals. Since his retirement, he has been actively involved in nurturing young talent, serving as an Age Group Selector under the BCB—a role that underscores his commitment to grassroots development.

Panel Restructuring Following Ashraf's Exit

The restructuring comes after former selection panel chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain opted not to renew his contract, which was set to run until February 2026. His decision prompted the BCB to overhaul the selection process and bring in fresh leadership with a broader mandate extending up to the 2027 World Cup cycle.

The expanded four-member structure is seen as a strategic effort to bring in diverse expertise—from international experience to domestic depth and youth development insights—ensuring comprehensive evaluation of players across all levels.

Looking Ahead to 2027

With the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 on the horizon, the BCB’s decision to appoint a seasoned and multifaceted selection panel reflects a long-term vision for sustained competitiveness on the global stage. Under Bashar’s leadership, the new committee will play a pivotal role in shaping Bangladesh’s cricketing future over the next few years.
