Ravichandran Ashwin Signs with San Francisco Unicorns for MLC 2026
In a landmark move for both the franchise and Major League Cricket (MLC), veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has signed with the San Francisco Unicorns for the 2026 season. Ashwin will become the first Indian-capped player to compete in the American T20 league, marking a significant milestone in MLC's growth and global appeal.
A Legacy of Excellence
With a decorated international career spanning over a decade, Ashwin brings unmatched experience and cricketing acumen to the Unicorns. A key figure in India's 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy triumphs, he has played over 100 Test matches and ODIs each, along with 65 T20 Internationals. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has represented franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and others, Ashwin remains one of the league's leading wicket-takers.
Ashwin's Vision for MLC
Expressing his excitement about the new chapter, Ashwin said: "The MLC has proven over recent seasons that it can put on a show, bringing in world-class players and offering significant exposure to US domestic cricket talent, and the opportunity to be a part of it with the San Francisco Unicorns was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."
He added: "Taking on the mantle as the first Indian-capped player to compete in Major League Cricket is a major responsibility that I fully embrace. My absolute focus is to help this franchise win games and push for its first Championship, while also putting on a spectacular brand of cricket for the Bay Area fans."
Leadership Backs the Signing
Unicorns head coach Cameron White praised Ashwin’s impact beyond just statistics. "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome a player of Ashwin's stature to the Unicorns. When you talk about match-winners and cricketing intelligence, his name is at the top of the list around the world," White stated. "His experience in high-pressure situations and his skill variations will be invaluable on the pitch and in the nets, and I can't wait to get into camp and start working with him."
Anand Rajaraman, co-owner of the Unicorns, echoed similar sentiments, calling the signing a "landmark moment for the Unicorns and the league as a whole." He emphasized Ashwin’s dual role as both a marquee name and a mentor: "While he'll obviously bring the spotlight on the team, Ashwin will also bring a unique wealth of T20 experience and cricketing talent that will be of huge benefit to us on the pitch."
Looking Ahead to 2026
The San Francisco Unicorns will open their 2026 MLC campaign on June 19 against the LA Knight Riders at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium. The season will culminate with the final on July 18 at the historic Oakland Coliseum, where Ashwin could make his debut and inspire a new generation of American cricket fans.
